Elephants from Jewett

The first United States citizen to experienced the market region of our concern was Josiah Harlan in 1830s and 1840s (see Macintyre). The second US citizen to act with durable consequence was A. C. Jewett who was contracted to facilitate the electrification of the certain buildings in Kabul and Jalalabad. Jewett's photo here captures the standard practice in 1800s for elephants to haul heavy loads. Elephants transported the new European minting machinery to Kabul, a subject treated in Chapter 5.
