Dost Mohammed and Secretary

The image comes from the first Anglo Afghan war of 1839-1842. It shows Dost Mohammed, who was displaced by and then pensioned in India by the British during and after the war, at work with a state secretary in a small mobile court setting. The issue of Afghan pensioners in British India is mentioned in passing in this text and merits separate substantive examination. The issue of secretarial services during the 1880-1901 period of Abd al-Rahman's rule is addressed in Chapter 5.
